PRAXIS Round Table Talk - Foreldreskap og Kunstnerskap
PRAXIS TEAM
PRAXIS Trondheim invites you to an open conversation about how we can create an art field that tolerates children and embraces the role of parents. This event is for all artists – whether you have children, plan to have children, work with artists who have children, employ artists with children or have been a child once. We want to explore the topic from different perspectives and brainstorm practical solutions and future visions together through conversations, play, physical movement tasks and awareness exercises.
Among other things, we will address specific challenges, such as working hours that do not always fit with the nursery, work trips - with or without children, unpredictability in working life and finances, physical stress in the role of performer (and parent).
Join us for an exchange about how we can make the art world more inclusive for parents and their children. Can we create a rich and creative working environment that embraces the whole spectrum of life.
Welcome to an inspiring conversation with PRAXIS Trondheim!

Dance and let go
- a dance practice where sharing is caring and nothing is wrong
KEN BRUUN
My artistic practice, in meeting with others, is primarily about sharing experiences,
share dance history, art history, share interests and try to create a space where everyone can be with shaping a workshop they can feel ownership of. I am concerned with micro and macro trauma within the art field of dance. The workshop offers sensory and practical alternatives to known and minor "traumas within dance".
We can work our ass off, without losing our ass.

The Wound of your Creativity
ANN-CATHRIN HERTLING
Very often we stop our creative impulses, because we are afraid of how the surroundings will respond to us.
With the support of The Movement Map of The 5 Rhythms, we will explore how we can follow and release our creative impulses without censoring ourselves. To embody our creativity - Finding liberation and expressing yourself effortless.
Each of The 5 Rhythms:
Flowing- Staccato -Chaos- Lyrical- Stillness contains different qualities that our body intuitively remembers. In this workshop we will explore the quality of each rhythm as an organic Wave of movement, impulses and energy
We will move through two WAVES of The 5 Rhythms.
The first one, we reconnect with our body and our own impulses
The second WAVE we will explore our spontaneous impulses as encounters with the group and in couples and trios.
Before we embark on this journey together, give yourself some time to reflect on these questions:
“What do you want to explore and experience both personally and artistically?”
“What are you longing for?”

Parkour
MARTIN HAUGLAND SUNDBY

Bio: Wei-An has spent his whole life falling down; it's a by-product of the belief that he can, even when he can’t – whether that meant trying to spin on his head or backflip before he was ready, or learn how to snowboard on his own. And though he may not be the best at those activities, he's become quite good at falling. He has, in fact, built his contemporary practice around his love-hate relationship with gravity, and the connections this relationship has with the psychological state of flow.
A street dancer turned contemporary creator, Wei-An is curious about how his background in breaking might be used to create moods and tell stories that draw the audience into the worlds of his choreography. This, together with his explorations in falling, has taken Wei-An to teach and perform in places such as Vancouver BC, Seoul, Singapore, London, Luxembourg, and more.
Currently, he is working on a full-length solo, A Reason for Falling, commissioned by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay (Singapore).

The Art of Falling
HWA WEI-AN
Wei-An's practice of ‘The Art of Falling’ is part navigation of space-time curvature, part happy accident. Growing up fidgety, Wei-An fell down a lot, and eventually, he figured out that falling down was both fun and a good way to not get hurt.
Today, he continues to explore falling for the pleasure it provides: a momentary sense of weightlessness, the thrill and speed of giving in to gravity, and the discovery of possible ways out of a tricky situation. It is a practice of going along rather than fighting what's happening, of learning to trust long years of training, and keeping an eye out for the next fun ride out there.
The aim of this workshop is to introduce fundamental technical skills and ideas about falling. These are tools that find practical application as a safety net for learning new physical skills, or in the construction of floorwork patterns. After the introduction of these techniques and ideas, we'll practice applying them in exercises around rolling and bailing out of tricky situations. Finally, the workshop will culminate with the learning of a movement sequence that demonstrates some of the ways in which falling can be used.

PRAXIS Workshop
ANN KATHRIN GRANHUS

PRAXIS Workshop
EWELINA SOBIERAJ
This workshop is designed to provide participants with a platform to explore and push the boundaries of their artistry, delving into innovative forms of movement expression. The workshop focuses on various aspects of technique, body awareness, and movement fluency. Participants will delve into the fundamentals of contemporary dance, including body posture, working with body weight, release, locomotion in space and movement fluency. These classes aim to teach participants how to work with movement in a creative and fun way using Ido Portal-inspired pair exercises, improvisation tasks, and choreographic tools. Through these exercises and tasks, participants will develop their body awareness, coordination, and mobility skills while having fun and be in a constant motion. Improvisation tasks encourage exploration and creativity, while choreographic tools challenge dancers to think outside the box and collaborate with others in the group. Overall, these workshops provide a space for participants to explore dance in a joyful and supportive environment.

TASK-WRITE-REVISE
ANU LAIHO
This workshop dives into the TASK-WRITE-REVISE method I developed and used in the Final Project of my Master’s in Dance, R E S P A C E (2021). It is a task based choreographic tool that uses repetition and accumulation to process movement ideas and to build patterns. The piece worked with imagination and space, with the aim to create authentic physical experiences of imagined physical spaces. The workshop approaches these themes only loosely, and aims more to offer an alternative compositional tool.
The method works in a cyclical manner, where a task is decided and executed, and the experience of doing the task is logged through intuitive writing – or alternatively drawing – and then revising the task into a new form. The aim is not to recreate a set movements, but accumulate and build up movement from our sensations, and to keep record of the kinaesthetic, the experienced and the feelings of “right” when improvising. The workshop works as an introduction to the possibilities of the method, but within the 4h frame, it does not aim to produce composition. Although they may always be happy surprises

Round table talk #3
PRAXIS TRONDHEIM TEAM
Welcome to the Round Table Talk with Praxis Trondheim. We have invited Icelandic choreographer Katrin Gunnarsdóttir to talk about her work ALDA, which is inspired by the theme: women's collective physical labour. We are very excited for her and one of the dancers from ALDA to share their experiences and to open a conversation around questions like:
What does physical labour mean for female dancers?
What was and is it like to work as a professional dancer?
What challenges are we facing now and in the future?
How to make a living as a performing artist and survive on the market?
What is needed to create a healthy work environment?
What can we learn from the international scene?
How to build a supportive community in Trondheim?
Praxis Trondheim is an initiative by and for Trondheim-based performing artists to create a space for sharing artistic practices. With the Round Table Talks we offer a platform for exchange and discussion around specific topics spiced with some movement invitations.

The performance as a crime scene
JASSEM HINDI
This workshop is an introduction to applied research in the field of performance and dance. In this framework, time-based arts are a creative process used to unveil something new about a given subject: dance is a forensic, investigative tool, and the performance is a murder scene.
How to create a performance that is intended to be a practice of collective imagination instead of using dance as the simple illustration of a pre-existing concept, or the aestheticization of a political display?
We will depart from two practical examples:
- the use of poems as choreographic and political landscapes for performance
- Haunting and hospitality as techniques to approach ecological violence from a forensic perspective

Round table talk #2
PRAXIS TRONDHEIM TEAM
Welcome to an open discussion about collaboration in the performing arts field and how to join forces for a rich and creative work environment in Trondheim.
How do different artists work with their own performing practices?
How to make a practice accessible to other movement practitioners, in addition to opening up for an interdisciplinary approach and a broader network?
What can we learn from each other?
What are the benefits and challenges of sharing artistic practice?
What is needed to create a strong network of collaborators in Trondheim?
How to build a community of professional artists from different disciplines who work with movement-based practices in Trondheim?
We want to discuss these questions and more during the Round Table with Praxis Trondheim and invite you to an open conversation spiced with some practical examples and movement invitations.

Partnerwork

Contact Improvisation
INGEBORG DUGSTAD SANDERS &
ANNA THU SCHMIDT
Contact improvisation (CI) is a dance technique in which points of physical contact provide the starting point for exploration through movement improvisation. The workshop offers an introduction to contact improvisation and a playful approach to the following themes: rolling point of contact, giving/receiving/sharing weight, leading and following, lifting and rolling. We start with a warm-up focussing on bodywork and body awareness that gives an introduction to touch and listening to the bodies and through body surfaces. Movement tasks in contact improvisation technique serve as tools for the exploration of the bodily communication between you and your partner. We finish with an open jam where you can play with the learned material and discover your own dance both alone and in physical contact with your partner.

Material for the spine
OTTO RAMSTAD
“With Material For the Spine, I was interested in alloying a technical approach to improvisational results. It is a system for exploring the interior and exterior muscles of the back. It aims to bring the light of consciousness to the dark side of the body, that is, the sides not much self-seen, and to submit sensations to the mind for consideration.”
Steve Paxton
Material For the Spine concentrates accumulated knowledges from Paxton’s study of walking, Contact Improvisation and Aikido practice to explore the movement possibilities in the spine and the connections between the head, pelvis, and vertebrae. This solo practice is a meditative study of a series of exercises, body puzzles and ideokinetic imagery.
Otto Ramstad followed Steve Paxton’s work of contact improvisation since 1996 and Paxton’s Material For The Spine since 2010. Not accessible for wheelchair users.

Texture and Movement
EDWIN CABASCANGO
Texture and movement
T&M workshops take elements from different somatic techniques and contemporary dance. For me it is crucial that dancers’ practice and training go together with performative experience. My goal is to change and activate the physical perception of our body and remind us of the infinite possibilities of movement. The first part of the class goes deeper into breathing forms and how to give direction and form to the body. The form of our breathing can reorganize the intention and expectations of the body. I use Biomechanics for the floorwork, because the physical body needs to understand the spiral form for effectiveness and energy in the articulations and muscles. Partnering is a tool for understanding your body and the second body through playing full dynamics and using the different levels of risk for falling and rolling. This kind of connection takes us into acrobatics. At the same time we use the foot work for transporting each other in space. Much of the material is inspired by fight and play that gives an opportunity to improvise and develop a dancer's own material.

Round table talk
PRAXIS TRONDHEIM TEAM

In January 2020, Winsnes/Ålskog was at a residency in Hammerfest at Dansearena Nord where they started developing their movement practice connected to their performance project Stillhet og mørke. The project is based on a common interest in silence and what silence can contain for body and mind. What is silence? According to researcher Olga V. Lehmann, there is no pure silence. Silence is a space in between, and is therefore dependent on visual and audible noise , sounds, movement and language. Can silence initiate new gestures and movements? For us it did. When the pandemic led to the shutdown of dance classes in spring 2020, we started an outdoor movement practice in Tøyenparken in Oslo. This became a weekly practice for professional dancers, where we continued exploring the methods we designed in Hammerfest.
The practice consists of different improvisational tasks with concise bodily frames/images/sensory impressions to embody. With funding from Oslo kommune we did six performances in three different parks in the old district of Oslo, performed between 2-4 October 2020. Winsnes/Ålskog were joined by five of the dancers who had participated in the practice on a regular basis. The performance was called "Stillhet og Mørke - FLOKK", and the dramaturgy/structure was made up of the four main methods of the practice.
This practice is suitable for dance artists from different backgrounds, abilities and interests. The practice requires an interest in tuning in to what is happening on the inside, on the outside and in relation to the rest of the group.
